What is a NEN 2484 inspection and when is it mandatory?

Dutch occupational health and safety legislation requires employers to ensure that their employees work with safe equipment. A periodic NEN 2484 inspection helps verify that climbing equipment remains safe and fit for use, thereby reducing the risk of workplace accidents. A NEN 2484 inspection is a periodic safety assessment of climbing equipment. Why do I need to have my ladders and stepladders inspected in accordance with NEN 2484?
In accordance with Dutch law, it is essential not to neglect periodic NEN 2484 inspections. In the event of a workplace accident, the Dutch Labour Inspectorate and the company's insurer may investigate whether the equipment involved was safe and had been inspected at the required intervals. What does a NEN 2484 inspection involve?

The inspection includes checks for damage, wear, deformation, stability, connections and joints, anti-slip features, and the overall condition of the equipment.
What happens if my ladder, stepladder, or access equipment does not pass the NEN 2484 inspection?

- Damage to stiles, rungs, steps, and platforms
- Deformation, cracks, dents, or fractures in the material
- Wear on hinges, joints, and fastening points
- Condition of anti-slip feet, end caps, and protective covers
- Presence of loose, missing, or defective parts
- Impact of dirt, paint, oil, moisture, rust, or corrosion
- Readability of labels, markings, and usage instructions
- Overall condition and suitability for safe use
Inspection by measurement and testing
- Check of dimensions and structural deviations
- Check of stability and steadiness
- Check of deflection, deformation, or play/looseness
- Assessment of the load-bearing structure under normal use
- Functional check of extendable or adjustable components
- Verification that the access equipment can be safely loaded and used

Rejected access equipment is clearly marked
